IS POST-OPERATIVE FOLLOW-UP NECESSARY?The technical risk of the surgery, nutritional and psychological complications make short and long term multidisciplinary follow-up essential.. The most frequent techniques address post-operative problems such as acute haemorrhaging, infection of the surgical incision, and belated effects such as eventrations, tear in the staples, etc. Monitoring after surgery is, for these reasons, indispensable. Although bariatric surgery has beneficial psychological effects, on occasion it produces relapses of depressive disorders, changes in eating habits and also rejection of the new image of the patient, which all require psychiatric support and close psychological monitoring. In the nutritional and weight follow-up, a specialist in endocrinology and a dietician are essential in the education of correct eating habits and to minimize the possibility of side effects, prophylaxis and/or correction of nutritional deficiencies through the administration and control of nutritional supplements and an overall control of the success of the operation. Esthetic surgery can also compliment bariatric surgery. When there is a large amount of weight-loss it can make it necessary to reconstruct the body's image.
