INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON: WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?This technique consists of the introduction of a small balloon of deflated silicon in the stomach cavity through the mouth. Once it is in the desired position, the balloon is inflated with serum (500-600 ml.) and a colorant (blue methylene). A specialist in digestive apparatus does this technique through a digestive endoscope after previously evaluating the viability of the stomach. The time needed to place the balloon varies between 30-35 minutes. Anaesthesia is not required (sedation is sufficient) nor surgery, and the patient can leave the clinic a few hours after the procedure. The balloon stays in the stomach for 3 to 6 months, depending on the patient; although it is made of high quality silicon and the patient receives antacids during this time period, with time the fluids and gastric bacteria can weaken and deflate the balloon. Once the estimated time period has passed, the balloon is removed through the same procedure used to insert it.
